Understanding the Essaouira trade winds

Essaouira's reputation comes mainly from its trade winds. When it settles, it gives several days of regular wind and makes the destination very interesting for learning or progressing in kitesurfing. This wind is often reinforced by the coastal thermal effect, especially in spring and summer.

This doesn't mean that all days are the same. An 18 knot forecast can become a very mild session in the morning then significantly more powerful in the afternoon. Conversely, certain modest announced days can offer a usable time window if you choose the time wisely.

Why morning and afternoon are not the same

The morning is often calmer, more readable, interesting for a first contact, a surf lesson or a quiet recovery. In the afternoon, the wind can really pick up: it's perfect for kiting when the level is suitable, but less gentle for someone who is discovering everything.

Chez KSE, on adapte le programme à cette réalité. On peut placer un briefing, une session surf ou une première manipulation à un moment plus calme, puis garder le créneau plus venté pour les élèves qui contrôlent déjà l'aile.

  • Kite beginners: we look for a regular wind, not necessarily the strongest.
  • Independent riders: the afternoon can offer the best sensations.
  • Surfing: swell, wind and tide count together.
  • Packages: keeping a flexible schedule greatly improves the quality of the stay.

Surf season and kite season: two different logics

The best kite season is often between spring and early autumn, with more frequent and regular wind. The best surfing season is wider, with interesting swells from September to May and sometimes more powerful conditions in winter.

To combine kiting and surfing, the transition periods are often very pleasant: March to June then September and October. We can take advantage of the wind, keep real surfing options and avoid extremes in crowds or conditions.

Small sizes useful when the wind rises: often 6 to 8 m2 depending on weight and level.

Mid-season kite

A 9 to 12 m2 covers a lot of sessions, with adaptation depending on the rider.

Surf

Combination almost all year round, board chosen according to level and swell.

Travel light

Renting on site can avoid an expensive boardbag for short stays.

FAQ

How long does it take to learn kitesurfing?+

Pour atteindre une autonomie de base, comptez souvent 8 à 12 heures réparties sur 4 à 7 jours. Le rythme dépend du vent, de votre aisance dans l'eau et de votre régularité.

What level do you need to rent kite equipment?+

An independent level is required: navigate on the two tacks, return to the starting point and manage safety. If the level is limited, we recommend a refresher lesson.

Are the lessons provided?+

L'encadrement école inclut les bases de sécurité et une responsabilité civile professionnelle. Une assurance personnelle voyage ou sport reste recommandée.

What happens if there is no wind?+

The session is postponed or replaced by a more suitable activity according to your choice: surfing, theory, visit or rest as part of a package.
