What is a downwinder with KSE

A downwinder involves setting off with the wind at your back or on the back side, then following the coast to a defined finishing point. In Essaouira, the classic itineraries allow you to leave the school area and discover a wilder coast, with waves, wide open spaces and fewer people.

This format requires real autonomy. The guide is not there to give a beginner lesson in the middle of the lesson, but to manage the route, briefing, general safety, wind reading and coordination with the vehicle. If your waterstart is not reliable or if you do not go upwind, you must first take a lesson again.

  • Complete briefing before departure: spot, wind, exit, signals, plan B.
  • Local guide during the route.
  • Transfer organized to return to base.
  • Water included on downwinders.

The equipment to provide

For a kite trip, the choice of kite size is more important than a classic session. You don't go on a long lesson with a kite that's too big just because it works at the start. The wind can pick up, the water can change, and fatigue makes mistakes more costly.

If you don't have the right equipment, we can supplement with KSE rental depending on availability. The team also checks the leash, harness, board, release system and actual level before validating the departure.

When you postpone a kite trip

A downwinder is carried over more easily than a classic lesson. If the wind is too weak, too offshore, too gusty or if the swell makes the exit dangerous, we don't force it. A 25 km lesson requires margin: the start, riding and finish must all be consistent.

The carryover can also come from the group level. If a rider is not independent enough after the briefing or warm-up, we prefer to transform the day into coaching close to the base. It's frustrating in the moment, but it's the only serious decision when security is not aligned.

  • Wind too weak or too gusty.
  • Orientation dangereuse pour le parcours prévu.
  • Houle ou shorebreak compliquant l'arrivée.
  • Insufficient actual level after assessment.

What you gain with a local guide

An independent rider can navigate alone in the bay, but a coastal trip requires local reading: areas to avoid, possible exits, effect of relief, thermal timing, choice of kite and organization of the return. The guide provides this reading and avoids transforming a good idea into a logistical hassle.

An independent level is required: navigate on the two tacks, return to the starting point and manage safety. If the level is limited, we recommend a refresher lesson.
